Bill Maness Good Samaritan Scholarship

The Bill Maness Good Samaritan Scholarship (BMGSS) was established in 2005 to honor the memory of Bill Maness, one of the most beloved recreation leaders of Peachtree Presbyterian Church. The Scholarship is designed to provide recognition and financial assistance to a student who exhibits acts of compassion and a desire to serve in their community; a student with the desire to live their life as a Good Samaritan. Recipients of the scholarship receive a $16,000 (total) scholarship for their college education.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE SCHOLARSHIP?
Encourage high school students to direct their lives beyond themselves, to rise above their own personal or financial hardships to help in their community
  • Honor students who do exceptional social work by awarding them with a college level scholarship throughout the two or four years it takes them to graduate
  • Illustrate how a true Christian walk can transform a student's life and the lives of those they touch

WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF OUR SCHOLARS?
  • Maintain a minimum 2.0 average in school
  • Continue to be active within their community
  • Maintain regular communication with the BMOC office and have transcripts sent each term for verification
  • Meet and spend time with their mentor. Each scholar is assigned a mentor to walk along side them as they study and experience college. Mentoring is a critical piece of all aspects of both the BMOC and the BMGSS as we believe that no child should stand alone

WHAT IS THE SCHEDULE FOR APPLICATIONS?
Applications are sent out to Atlanta Public Schools as well as to churches in the Atlanta Presbytery in early December of each year. They are due back in February; also will be available online in early December.

This year's (2011) Bill Maness Good Samaritan Scholarship Recipient, Taylor Walker, surrounded by the scholarship committee and Dr. Steve Huntley.
His mentor, James Cross, a member of Peachtree, tells us a little about being a mentor to Dontavious.
As part of the scholarship experience, each scholarship winner is paired with a mentor. Alison Drane, member of the scholarship committee, is to be the mentor for Taylor Walker as she begins her freshman year at Boston University this fall.
